40 DAYS OF DISNEY – DAY 24 – SONG #17 – “WHEN I SEE AN ELEPHANT FLY” – DUMBO – LENT 2014

2014 Lenten Devotional – “40 Days of Disney” – Day 24

Song #17 – “When I See An Elephant Fly” – Dumbo

Disney’s 1941 “Dumbo,” is one of the shortest animated feature in its collection, and coming off the commercial failure of “Fantasia,” was, in fact, never even intended to be a success.  However, something about the big eared, flying circus elephant who defied the odds told a story that has rung true with audiences for over 70 years, including our three year old son, who just celebrated a “Dumbo Circus” birthday party!

After drinking a little too much champagne-spiked water (a different blog altogether for a children’s movie!), Dumbo and his friend Timothy Q. Mouse wind up high in a tree surrounded by a group of crows.  Timothy is certain the only way they could have wound up there is if Dumbo had flown, but the crows don’t buy it, and their leader, Jim, sings, “I’d be done seen about everything when I see an elephant fly!”  Jesus had similar issues in his ministry with people demanding a need to “see it to believe it.”  One time, when a man asked Jesus to come heal his son, Jesus replied, “Unless you see miraculous signs and wonders, you won’t believe,” (John 4:48, CEB) before healing the child.  The man wanted a display of power.  Jesus demanded only belief.

Miraculous Healer, we believe in you because we trust in you.  Help our trust be strong enough to believe in your power, even when we don’t understand your ways, or immediately see the results we are looking for, knowing that you are always working for the good of your people.  Amen.
