2014 Lenten Devotional – “40 Days of Disney” – Day 40
Song #1 – “A Whole New World” – Aladdin
No song in the Disney catalogue tugs the heart strings of both men and women, boys and girls, quite like “A Whole New World,” from Disney’s “Aladdin.” Perhaps its the fact that a female voice is finally heard in a movie filled with masculine songs, or the stirring melody Alan Menken composed, or the fact that lyricist Tim Rice arranged the song as a perfectly traded duet, but “A Whole New World,” will forever be my all-time favorite Disney song.
The central message of the song isn’t too much of a variance from the standard themes of hope, freedom, and new life found in most of Disney’s Golden Renaissance period films, concluding with “a whole new world, that’s where we’ll be, a thrilling chase, a wondrous place, for you and me.” John of Patmos had a similar dream when he wrote, “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the former heaven and the former earth had passed away…” (Revelation 21: 1, CEB). The amazing thing is that Christ, through is life, death, and resurrection, has already begun establishing this kingdom here on earth now. We see glimpses of heaven in the hospitality of strangers, the compassion of loved ones, and the forgiveness of enemies. What’s more, we can take an active part in this kingdom, through acts of mercy and grace, offering a taste of the eternal glory to come.
Almighty God, we thank you for the love of your son Jesus Christ. Equip us by your Holy Spirit, with hearts ready to do your will here on earth, so that, through faith and by your grace, all can experience the heaven that awaits. Amen.
