40 DAYS OF DISNEY – DAY 12 – SONG #29 – “KISS THE GIRL” – THE LITTLE MERMAID – LENT 2014

2014 Lenten Devotional – “40 Days Of Disney” – Day 12

Song #29 – “Kiss The Girl” – The Little Mermaid

My college band, Exit 25, named after the beltway exit number for College Park, MD, became well known for our pop-punk cover of Disney’s “Kiss The Girl.”  Of course, we were more concerned with girls than music, which is probably why we aren’t a band anymore!  In the song, Sebastian, the crab, tries to convince Prince Eric to kiss Arielle, who had three days to achieve “true love’s kiss” (how that’s possible in three days is another blog entirely!), even though she traded her voice for the opportunity.

This song is my personal favorite from the movie, not only because of it’s catchy melody or its playfully romantic attitude, but because it speaks to the heart of human emotions.  Sometimes we need to realize that this human life won’t last forever (in Arielle’s case, just three days), and so we need to be bold and take some risks to live an abundant life.  In Ecclesiastes 9: 9-10, Solomon laments, “Enjoy life with your dearly loved spouse all the days of your pointless life that God gives you under the sun—all the days of your pointless life!—because that’s your part to play in this life and in your hard work under the sun. Whatever you are capable of doing, do with all your might because there’s no work, thought, knowledge, or wisdom in the grave, which is where you are headed,” (CEB).  To borrow a phrase, sometimes even Christians, who have been promised eternity, need some “Carpe Diem,” we need to seize the day!

God of every moment, let us live each moment of our lives with courage, knowing that you desire not only a life of fulfillment, but a life that honors you.  Amen.
