2014 Lenten Devotional – “40 Days Of Disney” – Day Three
Song #39 – “Everybody Wants To Be A Cat” – from The Aristocats
This song almost didn’t make the list, not due to lack of popularity or quality, but more due to the difficulty of relating a song about the coolness of cats and their musical prowess to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. For scripture that is written from the underside that proclaims, “I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ,” it is quite evident that popularity or “coolness” was the least of our authors’ concerns.
The Aristocats sing about “corny birds who tried to sing,” and “that square with a horn [who] makes you wish you weren’t born,” but thankfully for us, our divine audience could care less what we sound like when we praise him or what we look like when we follow him, so long as we are doing so with an earnest heart. Not even the judgement of the coolest of cats means anything compared with the great judgement of our heavenly Lord and Savior.
Lord, amidst our desires to please others and win popularity according to the world’s standards, realign our desires so that we seek only to do your will, honoring you by loving our neighbor and putting the needs of others before ourselves and our own reputations. Thank you for the incredible example of your Son, Jesus Christ, who honored each and every one of us even to the cross. In his holy name, we pray. Amen.
